“Otoosan’s Arrival”

By Admin

12 34

August 09, 2014 in the afternoon at 5:00 P.M. was the time the airplane with Otoosan and his company touched down the Davao International Airport. All members of the group that met Otoosan composed of Mr. and Mrs. Winston Mallari, Mr. Shuji Honda, Mr. and Mrs. Alfonso P. Escovilla,Jr. , Mrs. Carmen Apigo and Mrs. Adelaida Panaguiton were excited to see him. However, on account of miscommunication with the airport management we were asked to wait. All passengers that took that flight had already been fetched by their respective families but we have yet to find out the cause of the delay in allowing the three – Otoosan, Kazunari San (Otoosan’s son and Yuske San, Otoosan’s grandson) from leaving the airport. We were directed to proceed from the International arrival area to the domestic arrival area. While waiting from the outside we can see the three, namely: Otoosan, Kazunari san and Yusuke) and this time Honda san was able to get in, we were told that the wheelchair of Otoosan was left behind, either in Manila or in Japan. At any rate at past 6:00 P.M. finally Otoosan was ushered outside the airport from the domestic area while the rest of us were waiting in between the international and domestic area since we did not know what was going right inside.

Otoosan was teary-eyed when he saw us. On his face, observed that he was glad that after five years, he is back to his second home – Davao City. The group of Otoosan consisting of Kazunari san, Yusuke san, Mr. and Mrs. Mallari proceeded to the Mallari’s residence for a much needed rest of our honored visitor. Though invited for dinner we begged off since we had other commitments after meeting Otoosan at the airport. Welcome home, Otoosan, we have missed you a lot in all activities the past five years.

Letter From the Federation President

By Admin

September 3, 2012
Our beloved Officers of the Federation
Greetings!
Thank you for your letter dated July 18, 2012 of which I received yesterday.

For  your information, on August 20 0f 2010, I have retired as Honorary Consul-General of Japan in Ceremony hosted by the Embassy of Japan at Baguio Country Club, ending my humble 3 terms, totaling 15 years of service to the Government of Japan.

Early in September of that the sane year, I felt severe chest pains and was rushed to the Cardinal Santos Hospital in San Juan City, MM. The Angiogram result showed that my heart’s arteries had multiple blocks. I was given 3 options, to undergo multiple heart by-pass, angioplasty or not to undergo any procedure at all.

Considering my age of almost 80 at the time, we chose to go for Angioplasty. I was operated on September 9, 2012 and 6 Stents were interested in my left heart’s arteries. I thank the Almighty God for the successful operation. I will be turning 82 this year, but I have limited my physical activities and have tried to avoid mental stress as per my doctor’s advice.

I apologize for being inactive in the Federation’s activities for the above reasons.

Regarding the Federation Assembly meeting, yes, Mr. Onari called me years ago requesting for a Federation meeting and Mr. Buni also called my attention after the last PNLSC meeting that I attended in Manila.

After my operation I have long desired to call for a Federation meeting/election, so that I can formally turn-over my position to a new leadership. I cannot just resign from my position and fade away because the Embassy of Japan and other authorities still calls my attention and invites me in their activities now and then because of my former as Honorary Consul-General and as President of our Federation.

The other problem was the financial capability of the Federation to hold a meeting. However, as yopu have suggested in your letters that a meeting of the PNLSC will be held sometimes in November and the most of the Presidents of the chapters will be present, it will be very good opportunity for us to coincide our Federation meeting and election on the same date.

It appears in your letters that you have already acquired clearance from PNLSC. But I still made a formal request with PNLSC –Japan Chairman Atty. Kawai.

I am happy to inform you that I just received a call from their Secretary-General Nori Inomata that our request has been approved and our Federation meeting will be held in Manila in the morning of November 11, 2012 before the PNLSC meeting.

“From the Desk of The President”

By Admin

After more than three decades of serving the Philippines Nikkei Jin Kai, Inc. this representation became its President on account of the resignation of Mrs. Nelma Nacion Adachi. Her resignation is confined to her position as President of the Association. Relinquishing her post is anchored on a valid and meritorious ground. However, her being a true blooded descendant, she still is performing as the association representative on concerns affecting some of our activities, more so on the plight of our descendants in Japan. In fact, she was invited by Asia Africa Latin-America Association (AALA), the only Ngo in Japan which can participate in the non-aligned nation summits, to present to the group this October the historical background of the association, its functions and activities that resulted in forging friendly relations with established and prestigious groups in Japan. Reports along this line will be published in our next issue.

Good news! Our association has received the favorable decision rendered in the Shuseki Petition submitted by Carlos Toshimitsu. He is now a Category A descendant. From the least category for want of documents that support his root Mr. Toshimitsu is legally recognized as Japanese descended Filipino. This came about because of the joint effort of our association with the Philippine Nikkei Legal Support Center, based in Manila and Japan, headed by Atty. Kawai. Patience, endurance, sacrifice and understanding are traits that pave the way to positive results. Mr. Toshimitsu has been waiting for this momentous event for 76 years. Born to a Japanese father who died during the war and was left alone, he was at a quandary where to start in searching his Japanese relatives. Because of our relationships with our legal partner in Japan, he has succeeded in proving his ascendancy coupled with documents authenticated by government agencies inclusive of the participation of the association.

At his age it would be difficult to be in Japan on permanent status. But this notwithstanding, he was full of joy when he came home after a brief stay in Japan, savoring what he had missed for 76 years, as it was the country of his father. While in Japan for the Court Proceedings, he fortunately had the opportunity to meet a long lost relative who gave him photos of his Japanese father. The meeting is one unforgettable event we normally see in movies but as regards the case of Mr. Toshimitsu, this is one moment that can be cherished and he can declare to the whole world that indeed he belongs to a Japanese clan whom he could be proud of.

This is one big achievement the association has done for one of the members this year. There were members in the past who encountered the same experience and we hope to see more in the coming years.

Our association has existed for than three decades. As far as I know, no other association of the same objectives and purposes has survived. Our association became what it is today on account of the cooperation of every one, the harmony permeating in the board room where opinions at time clashed but resulting to the one common resolution which is beneficial to all. No member of the board of directors has employed any form of irregularity in any action taken involving the operational aspects of the office as everything is reported during the general assembly to members present. No one could point a finger at any of the officers that they have acquired personal benefits in serving the association.

As we have been emphasizing, the Philippine Nikkei Jin Kai, Inc. is the only group that succeeded in establishing an educational institutional from the elementary, high school to college level. The only association that has a Polyclinic, serving the Nikkei community and neighboring subdivision. This was made possible because of a grant from Nippon Foundation. The question that may be asked is why the Philippine Nikkei Jin Kai, Inc.? The Nippon Foundation has reposed trust and confidence on the capabilities of the people running the association, hence the grant. In fact, monthly reports as to the activities and operations of the Polyclinic are being relayed to Nippon Foundation.

The association, for all those who are updated, has its Museum in Calinan. Other than that, the elementary level is starting to progress in Calinan, an extension of our educational institution in Lanang. Other than our association, our educational institution, our Polyclinic, our Museum in Calinan and the elementary school in Calinan, members who recently left for Japan are kept abreast of the Cooperative established and in fact some are already inventors of this entity.
For the better understanding of everyone, not all these entities are being run by the association. On account of the intricacies of the Philippine Law, requiring registration of entities not falling within the objectives and purposes of the By-laws and Articles of Incorporation of the PNJK,INC., the different entities established under the umbrella of the association has to follow the prescribed requirements.

While under the umbrella of our association, registration, separate and distinct from our association, is mandated. As a mandate, there is a need to create a policy making body and another set of members of the board of directors/trustees mostly in the newly created entities sit as members of directors of the association.

There is nothing to fear, as our service, being real blooded Japanese descendants, is guided by dedication and honesty.

My appeal to all is to keep on trusting the leadership of the association. As members you have an obligation to the association. Associations could not exist without its members’ cooperation. Expansion and development are proofs or concrete evidence that everything is above board. You are part of this development and progress. We are not politicians promising unreachable goals but what you see around are products or our unity, harmony and understanding. Anyone who states the contrary is challenged to take proper action before the appropriate forum.
May God bless us in every undertaking that we embark as the projects that you see are the only legacy that the officials of the second generation can transmit to the young generation.

“From the Desk of The President, May 2013”

By Admin

Allow me to take this opportunity to express my heartfelt gratitude to the members who came and participated in the activities held last May 19, 2013, the 33rd General Assembly of the PNJK Inc.

For those who were unable to attend due to reason beyond your control, you are hereby notified that every second Sunday of May each year such event takes place.  This must be so because the members are entitled to know what so far the officials have done the past months and will further undertake in contributing to the progress and development not only of the Nikkei Jin Community but the whole Davao City, as well.

Each entity in the campus, the PNJK, Inc., which is the mother association, the PNJK-IS, the MKD, the Polyclinic and Diagnostic Center, the Cooperative and our latest contribution to the educational arena is the construction of a new school building in Calinan, gave not only narrative reports but the financial standing of each. Our association is the only group that is service oriented, providing medical services other than producing professionals in various fields. We are proud to state that we are the only group that has embarked on education, medical and economic development which is the Cooperative. It is hoped that you as members will continue to keep updated with the activities of the association as well as extend assistance in whatever way that you can for unification, harmony and attainment of the most elusive peace.

NOTICE TO ALL PNJK INC. MEMBERS:

Those who are delinquent in their annual dues are informed of the amnesty grant to members who have failed to update their dues with the Philippine Nikkei Jin Kai, Inc. The text of the Board Resolution No. 18-03-13 is quoted:

RESOLVED THAT AMNESTY SHALL BE GIVEN TO THE DESCENDANTS WHO ARE DELINQUENT IN THE PAYMENT OF THEIR ANNUAL DUES. THE FOLLOWING ARE THE POLICIES TO BE FOLLOWED:

THE AMNESTY SHALL BE EFFECTIVE MARCH 2013TO JUNE 2014;

  1. THIS IS APPLICABLE TO MEMBERS WHO HAVE BEEN TO JAPAN; AND
  2. REGARDLESS OF THE AMOUNT DUE TO THE ASSOCIATION, THE MAXIMUM AMOUNT TO BE PAID SHALL BE P10,000.00, THE COMPUTATION SHALL BE
  3. 00 PER YEAR AND P120.00 PER YEAR WHEN THEY ARE BACK IN THE PHILIPPINES.

Members are likewise urged to update your family tree.  Our Legal Aide Section will accept the latest addition in your family. Those descendants who were single at the time of registration and are currently married, you are requested to submit your certificates of marriage and if a child is born, furnish the office copy of the live certificate as well as the death certificates of the family member who have left ahead of us. This is a requirement the Embassy of Japan in Manila is asking for their office consumption.

Members are likewise informed to take note of the Iresai Celebration which is usually observed every August 15, but at times moved on a weekend to give members who are employed the opportunity to be around.  Our association is regularly observing the week-long celebration of the RP-Japan Festival in the month of October where most of the benevolent Japanese benefactors take time to fly from Japan to Davao just to be with the Nikkei Community.

PNJK, Inc. is likewise a co-sponsor of Kichijoji Lions Club and Datu Uchida Foundation and the Davao City Baseball Association in the Davao City Baseball Cup which is being held every February-March of each year. Public and private schools in the Elementary and High School levels have been fielding their teams to this event.

The most important thing is find time to come or call our office and we are encouraging all to be part of the association’s activities.
