Davao-Okinawa Friendship Tour

By Admin

33Every year, Japanese nationals from Okinawa Prefecture pay homage to their deceased relatives and friends buried in Davao. This year the large group of 53 arrived in the city on July 21, 2017, to fulfill their annual commitment.

They first visited the Tamugan Shrine, offering wreaths and prayers for the souls of those buried thereat. The Tamugan Shrine monument was erected by and in behalf of those who had been born in Davao, and whose kin died and were buried in the Tamugan Area.

After visiting Tamugan, the group passed by the Philippine–Japan Museum located at the Philippine Nikkei Jin Kai International School, Calinan Branch. One
visitor named Taboru recalled his English Teacher Mrs. De Lara, whose picture is posted in the museum.

From Calinan School the group moved on to the Mintal Public Cemetery, and then finally to Lubogan, where they likewise offered their prayers. A small dinner party was held at Waterfront Insular Hotel to culminate the group’s meaningful trip.

22Experience of a lifetime23
Every job offers knowledge but the experiences of
being a Project Administrator is quite special. Dealing
with elderly people is challenging but rewarding, on
November 4, 2017, the PNLSC celebrated the 209
Approved Shuseki. Every P.A. and former PA are
grateful with their job because they help other people
to be recognized as Japanese Citizen. Even though
some cases are difficult, PA will do their best to get
a positive judgment, as looking for evidences is not
easy because all the documents during the war were
destroyed and witnesses are no longer around. Some
of the PA is tearful because of the experience of the
2nd gen that you can’t imagine that they overcome
all the hardships without their fathers. Even though
some descendants are already recognized they
are still longing for their father and to be with them.
Seeing them happy will make you feel blissful for the
very reason that you know you were able to help them
become Japanese Citizens.
We as PA will continue in the research and
fieldworks for our unrecognized descendants and
fulfill their dreams.
Ganbarimashou!!!

H.E President Rodrigo R. Duterte

The PNJK officials and heads attended the National Day of Japan hosted by His Excellency Japanese Ambassador Kazuhide Ishikawa, with no less than the Republic of the Philippines Pres. Rodrigo R. Duterte as the guest of honor at SMX on December 01, 2016.

We were extremely thankful since we were the only group that was given the opportunity to have a special photo with the President. The PNJK family’s excitement could not be contained especially when one of our colleagues, the PNJK Davao President, Judge Antonina Escovilla was especially mentioned during Pres. Duterte’s speech and was even called by the President himself to join the dignitaries in their official photo. Congrats Madam Judge and banzai to all Nikkeijins!

By Admin

Leadership in an office or in any entity for that matter changes when so required. PNJK Inc. has its new set of officers after the celebration of the 35th General Assembly and Araw ng Nikkeijin.

Likewise the term of office of Hon. Koichi Ibarra as head of the Consular Office of Japan in Davao City came to an end due to his retirement from this office last March 18, 2015. Installed to take over management of said office is the Honorable Tomoko Dodo. She reported for duty last April 02, 2015 and the Consular Office in Davao City commenced in accepting visitors for a courtesy call.

PNJK, Inc. President Ret. Judge Antonina B. Escovilla, together with Mrs. Ines P. Mallari, President of the Mindanao Kokusai Daigaku and the PNJK-International School Main as well as the head of the Philippine Nikkeijin Rengokai and Mrs. Carmen C. Apigo, School Principal of the PNJK-IS Calinan Branch and Officer In Charge of the Philippine-Japan Museum paid their courtesy call to the Hon. Tomoko Dodo on April 15, 2015 in the morning.

Exchange of information took place and Hon. Dodo is a very pleasant person to talk to. With her wide experience as a diplomat we are certain that the Consular Office of Japan in Davao City will continue to remain cordial to all citizens of Davao and the willingness to extend support more so to the members of the various association and groups one of which is the Philippine Nikkei Jin Kai, Inc.

A LANDMARK IN THE NAME OF GENUINE HARMONY AND ACCORD

by: Ruben Pascua

Every passerby couldn’t help but view the towering statues of individuals at the main entrance of the PNJK compound – The Philippine – Japan Friendship Monument at Angliongto Avenue, Lanang Davao City. Since its blessing and unveiling to the public last October 3, 2012, the monuments have been attracting a lot of people to come closer and take pictures of these gigantic statues that remind each and everyone of the mutual relationship between Philippines and Japan.

Sculpted by one of the finest artists we have in this country, Kublai Milan; the Philippine – Japan Friendship Monument which costed an estimated amount of 1.2 million pesos shared by the four entities – Philippine Nikkei Jin Kai Inc., Philippine Nikkei Jin Kai International School, Mindanao Kokusai Daigaku and PNJK Polyclinic and Diagnostics Center depicts the meeting of varied cultures, diverse thoughts and assortment of rituals. It gives us a clear picture that despite the diversities, Philippines and Japan relationship has paved the way to a more thorough awareness, understanding and more sincere appreciation of the other members of the global village. The monument is a valid testimony of our willingness to create a union with humanity and because of these union, we have achieved progress as an institution.

“Giving credit to where credit is due,” Inside the Mindanao Kokusai Daigaku (MKD) compound are two other monuments. The administration of PNJK has thought of giving much value to the support of Masataka Ajiro, Sensei Datu Tatsuo Uchida and in honor and memory of his wife Ayako Uchida by constructing monuments that show their sincerity to establish an institution of learning that would become an asset to the community. These two benevolent benefactors of this institution are very much instrumental to the growth of PNJK.

The unveiling and blessing of said monuments was officiated by Rev. Bernardo N. Fernandez Sr. and attended by local government officials, Honored Japanese guests and visitors, members of the PNJK family, students, parents and media people.

The message of Rev. Fernandez tells us that the Philippines – Japan Monument tells us that   peculiarities are set aside and personal interests are relegated, all in the name of genuine harmony and accord. The contributions of Philippines and Japan to the community or to the world are the products of our glorious past. Our mutual relationship with the other members of the global vllage affords us the honor to live harmoniously with the entire human race.
